07/17/10

We finished the Freedom Trail tour at the harbor near the USS Constitution. This ship was built in the late 1700's and was used in the War of 1812. I believe it is the oldest ship in the nation in its original condition. The tour guide told us that the Constitution would be arriving back in the harbor not long after the tour finished. She had been taken out by tug boats to sail up and down the river since it was July Fourth. (Tug boats are used to move her now.)

We decided it would be fun to watch her come back in to dock. We had to wait a while, and I will say that it was one of the hot days we experienced in Boston. We were "used" to it, but it was still hot. lol Water and ice cream were on the "menu" while we waited!! When she did arrive it was exciting to see her!

One part of the Boston skyline
A fire boat escorted her back into the harbor area where she would dock. That in and of itself was neat to see!!
(The Constitution is behind the fire boat to the right.)
Just the fire boat with Boston as backdrop.

You can see the tugboats bringing her in! I loved the flag blowing.

It was neat to watch them turn her around so she could "back in" to her position at the dock.

Wesley and Mikayla loved it. Wesley took video of her arrival with his camera. I am glad we waited so we could see it!

We needed to rest a moment before walking alllllllll the way back to where we started.

As we walked past the Old North Church there was a memorial up for those who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was touching.

For every soldier killed there was a dog-tag placed on the chain. There were a lot of dog-tags....
Freedom is really not free.... it comes with a price. From our beginnings as a nation to the present day, that is still true. I am thankful for the sacrifice....

I LOVE Boston (to visit) & you have brought back some great memories w/your pictures!
Hey, would you & the kids like to come over one day next week to swim? Most likely Thur. or Fri. would be best for me, but anytime during the day is fine. G.'s kids start school the week after that, so I thought maybe we could get you all over here before then. You don't have to actually "swim", but the kids could swim & we 3 could visit... But the water feels pretty good just to cool off. I still have your Lowe's card & would love to give it to you then.... Just let me know if this might work.

I love Boston too and I've always wanted to go for the 4th of July. In college I went for a week of Open Air Evangelism - that was my first trip. Then later one of my college roommates lived there for a while and I visited her and her family. I saw a lot of some of the things you've shown, but I never did the Freedom Trail.
